Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanapol Setabrahmana
Currently the Assistant Music Director of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Thanapol Setabrahmana is one of Thailand’s leading young conductors. He also currently serves the Chair of Conducting Department and the Director of Bands at the College of Music, Mahidol University, where he serves as the conductor of Mahidol Wind Orchestra
A prizewinner of The American Prize in Conducting 2013 and 2014, Setabrahmana is a conductor whose experience and expertise cover a broad range of repertoire including orchestral, wind ensemble, operatic, choral, and contemporary music. He has conducted and led ensembles in performance in a number of different countries such as China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Through several international masterclasses, competitions, and guest conducting invitations; he had the privilege to conduct prestigious ensembles such as the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonic of Catalonia, the “Mihail Jora” Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau, the London Classical Soloists, the Berlin Sinfonietta, the Gwinett Chamber Orchestra, the members of West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Venice Chamber Orchestra, and the Café Momus Contemporary Ensemble
Prior to this appointment, Setabrahmana held the position of an assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble. He was also on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Preparatory Division, teaching conducting and musicianship. Dur-ing his studies in the United States, he served as a doctoral conducting associate for CCM Wind Studies and a graduate assistant conductor of the New England Conservatory (NEC) Wind En-sembles. He regularly conducted the CCM Wind Orchestra, Chamber Winds, Chamber Players, Brass Choir, as well as the NEC Wind Ensemble and Jordan Winds.
His principal teachers include Charles Peltz, William Drury, Glenn D. Price, Terrence Milligan, and Christopher Hughes. He was coached by several internationally recognized conducting pedagogues such as Ovidiu Balan, Michael Haithcock, Donald Hunsberger, Leonid Korchmar, Gustav Meier, Colin Metter, Larry Rachleff, Donato Renzetti, Timothy Reynish, H. Robert Reyn-old, Donald Schleicher, and Mark Shapiro, among others.
Thanapol Setabrahmana received a doctoral degree in conducting (with music history cognate) from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a master’s degree in conducting (graduated with Academic Honor) from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a bachelor degree in music composition (graduated with first class honor) from the College of Music, Mahidol University. His recent achievement includes Special Commendation Award from the conducting competition held by London Classical Soloists.
